Oulu Game LAB LEARNING EXPERIENCE CREATES INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMS TO WORK ON GAME DEVELOPMENT IN A PROCESS FROM CONCEPT TO FINAL PRODUCT. TEAMS INCLUDE STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS FROM FINLAND AND AROUND THE WORLD WITH EXPERTISE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN, PROGRAMMING, SOUND DESIGN, GAME DESIGN, PRODUCTION, SCRIPT-WRITING, SALES AND MARKETING AND 3D MODELLING.

Oulu Game LAB is a interdisciplinary education program, tailored to meet the needs and requirements of the modern, fast-moving gaming industry. Besides assisting in the development of specialised skills required for the game building field, Oulu Game LAB also supports the recycling of talents from companies like Nokia and Microsoft, in effort to decrease the unemployment rates in the area through the creation of new jobs and opportunities.

The global gaming industry has expanded rapidly to become one of the world’s leading industries in the creative field of media, arts and culture. The gaming industry has also experienced a significant upward trend in Finland and Oulu Game LAB works to support this growth by producing new game industry jobs, companies and professionals in the Oulu region.

 

Oulu Game LAB CURRICULUM

Oulu Game LAB curriculum consists of two 30 ECTS credit course packages, Demo Path and Game Path and 15 ECTS of possible Summer Studies.

Demo Path is the starting point for all Oulu Game LAB students. The first month focuses on rapid concept design and teaching the basics of working in the game industry, from game design to business. The next stage--and the bulk of demo path--is dedicated to game development and to refining the skills of each individual in his or her chosen role. Each team on the path aims to create a playable game demo.

Those who have completed the demo path can continue on to Game Path. On Game Path, teams continue to work on games developed in Demo Path, aiming for a full release. 

 

IN COLLABORATION WITH POHKE PROJECT

POHKE (Game industry know-how and business incubator development of Northern Ostrobothnia Project)

The goal of this project is to further develop and spread the Game Lab education and pre-incubator model which has been created in Oulu University of Applied Sciences, to Oulu Southern Region in Centria University of Applied Sciences in cooperation between Centria and Oamk. Like so the organizations want to enhance know-how in game industry and create more and better game industry companies and products to Northern Ostrobothnia. Means to achieve this are active monitoring of industry, production and application of new knowledge for game industry development, bringing required experts to area and networking in industry events. For more information please contact Mika Määttä (mika.maatta@oamk.fi).

 

DIVE DEEPER

During their studies at OGL, the future game developers get the opportunity to present their projects to international publishers, investors and professional game developers, as well as attend national and international conferences.

The locations vary, but the possibilities include Sweden, Germany, Japan and United Kingdom.
